This summer, we are determined to try every “paleo friendly” restaurant in Newport and the surrounding area! Your ohh sooo giving coaches will be visiting these fine establishments and blogging the report.

Up this week – The Counter Newport Beach:

The Counter

1104 Irvine Avenue (Westcliff Plaza)

Newport Beach, CA 92660

949.642.0700

With 312,120+ different burger combinations, even the pickiest eater will be pleased with the variety found at The Counter. Even better, the extensive options and casual atmosphere makes this place a convenient option for paleo peeps to eat with their non paleo friends.

Paleo friendly options include the signature burgers in a bowl which are pretty much a burger without the bun. Some of them are designed to include non-paleo/Whole30 items in them but you can request they keep them out. Also, they offer a constantly evolving “Market Selection.” These are locally sourced and sustainable Protein, Cheese, Topping, Sauce and Bun choices from local chefs. Even better, all the humainly raised and handled animal proteins are 100% natural, hormone, and antibiotic free.

Without a doubt, the best paleo/Whole9 menu option is the build your own burger. With this you can custom build your bunless wonder to include whatever your heart desires.

Here are a few tips on how to build your burger Whole30:

  • Choose the greens instead of a bun.
  • Skip the cheese section entirely.
  • Avoid the corn and all fried toppings.
  • Choose extra juicy and flavorful toppings like grilled onions, pineapple, or roasted peppers and skip the dressing all together.

Don’t worry about asking lots of questions at this place. They specialize in customized burgers so you can be as selective as you like and not feel like you’re being a burden to the server.

My personal favorite combo is the 1/3 turkey burger on a bed of mixed greens with olives, dill pickles, grilled pineapple, sprouts and sauteed mushrooms! If you’ve been, share your Whole9/paleo combination with us below!
