Google “definition of focus”, and you will get more information than you have time to read. This word has so many meanings, yet words such as clarity, attention, concentration, and energy pop up in nearly every definition. This word is on the wall in our gym to remind us to tune out the noise, to focus on the task at hand so that we can learn to focus on the goals we have set for our lives.
Once again, Lisbeth Darsh said it best:
There’s a lot of noise in the world. Some of it is good noise, some is bad, some just is. As with anything in life, you have to learn to pay attention to what matters, to what’s important to you, to what you can use to make your life better.
The rest of the chatter, the noise, the din, the ruckus? Tune it out. If it doesn’t make your life better — or if your participation in it does not make anyone else’s life better — then why bother?
I see so many good people who don’t get to great, simply because they got lost in the din along the way, in the lights and the chatter and the gossip. They failed to focus, and so they lost. They failed to seize the opportunity in front of them because they were too busy looking at their neighbor’s opportunities. They unintentionally squandered their own energy, like a schoolkid spending all her piggy bank money on something that sparkled but sure wasn’t ever going to be a diamond.
Now, I’m not saying don’t have fun. We need more laughter in this world, not less. Everybody needs some jackassery. Just don’t be a jackass. Don’t lose focus. Don’t forget that you’ve got goals — in the gym, in your work, in your life — and that if you want to reach them, you’re going to have to let go of some stupid s**t. Success is the result of unyielding, unwavering, total and full almost-OCD commitment to the job at hand. It’s not that you just got to want it. You got to want it really bad and be willing to stick with whatever you have to do to get it.
So, tune out the bulls**t — in your head and coming from the yapper next to you. And then watch what happens …
